Causes of Retinal Dystrophy<\/h2>\n

Retinal dystrophy can be caused by various diseases<\/strong> (renal failure, diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, leukemia, high myopia) and by a genetic predisposition.<\/p>\n

Forms of Retinal Dystrophy<\/h2>\n

There are several forms of the disease. The most common are the following:<\/p>\n

  1. Retinitis pigmentosa, or RP, is an inherited disorder that leads to gradual progressive vision loss. It is usually diagnosed at a young age.<\/li>\n
  2. Age-related macular degeneration affects the elderly and is associated with aging changes in the body.<\/li>\n
  3. The white dot syndromes are a group of genetic inflammatory diseases that often affect children and worsen with age.<\/li>\n
  4. Best disease, also called Best vetelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD), is associated with a cyst forming under the retina. The cyst may rupture which will result in scarring and subsequent dystrophy.<\/li>\n
  5. Peripheral retinal degeneration – appears when a person has a high degree of myopia. Such patients are at risk for retinal detachment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Symptoms of Retinal Dystrophy:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • loss of side vision (\u201ctunnel vision\u201d);<\/li>\n
    • loss of central vision (in advanced cases);<\/li>\n
    • reduced ability to see at night (“night blindness”),<\/li>\n
    • increased light sensitivity or glare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Retinal Dystrophy: Recommendations<\/h2>\n

      It is recommended that patients with retinal dystrophy:<\/p>\n

      1. Avoid direct exposure to UV radiation. Sunglasses will help protect your retina from the sun, but they cannot improve your vision.<\/li>\n
      2. Take antioxidants. They are an additional agent used for treating patients with retinal dystrophy, but there is no convincing evidence that they are 100% helpful.<\/li>\n
      3. Quit smoking. Smoking is known to cause oxidative damage to the retina, so anyone predisposed to a retinal disorder should quit this bad habit.<\/li>\n
      4. Have regular eye exams to monitor the progression of the disease.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
