Astigmatism: Causes and Symptoms

Astigmatism in children is often related to genetic factors and can already be found in two-year-olds by an experienced ophthalmologist.  Acquired astigmatism develops as a result of an eye injury or developmental disorders of the dentition. Objects look blurry or distorted.

Myopia or Short-Sightedness in Children

A very common feature of this eye disorder is that distant objects appear blurred, while close objects can be seen clearly. Most often myopia starts in children of school age and is caused by eye strain. If your child keeps complaining he or she can`t see well what is written on the board, you should consider an eye examination in a clinic. There are three types of myopia:

1. Congenital myopia. Poor eyesight is present at birth, distant objects appear blurred to such child. It is difficult for them to focus on an object, they wrinkle their forehead and may be slightly cross-eyed.
2. Hereditary myopia. If a father or a mother are short sighted, most likely this eye disorder will be transmitted to their child. Such children should be examined at least once every six months in order to get a correct diagnosis at an early stage and prevent the development of myopia.
3. Acquired (induced) myopia occurs due to huge eye strain. Poor lighting, poor posture, too much time in front of a computer screen can cause this eye disorder.
