Laser Trabeculoplasty

It is the most modern, most effective, safe and painless method of treating open-angle glaucoma.

Laser trabeculoplasty helps normalize eye pressure by restoring the outflow of intraocular fluid. Thus, the risk of the most severe complication of glaucoma – irreversible blindness – will be prevented.

Laser treatment is unique as with a laser it is possible to perform surgery on the eye`s drainage system without dissecting the eyeball, that is, without making an incision in the eye wall.

Indications for Laser Trabeculoplasty

Glaucoma treatment should be supervised by the ophthalmologist, his/her recommendations should be adhered to and regular diagnostic monitoring of visual status is necessary.

Laser trabeculoplasty is recommended:

In case of primary open-angle glaucoma;

In patients unable to comply with a medication regimen aimed to normalize intraocular pressure;

In case of moderate to heavy trabecular pigmentation in structures of the anterior chamber angle;

For pseudoexfoliation glaucoma.

How Is Laser Trabeculoplasty Performed?

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. The doctor uses a high-energy laser beam that inflicts a certain number of tiny pinpoint burns on the surface of the trabecular meshwork – part of the drainage system of the eye. Thus, the trabecular meshwork cellularity increases, and the outflow of intraocular fluid improves.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. It lasts about half an hour, during which time the patient can see the laser light flashing green or red.

After the Surgery

The doctor measures the patient’s eye pressure, prescribes special anti-inflammatory drops and recommends further treatment to control glaucoma progression.

After the laser trabeculoplasty procedure, the patients may have cloudy vision, experience heightened sensitivity to light. It will go away within a few days after the operation.

Efficacy of Laser Trabeculoplasty

Laser treatment is especially effective in the early stage of open-angle glaucoma. In 75-80% of cases, it is possible to normalize intraocular pressure, and a postoperative patient can stop using IOP-lowering eye drops.

The use of laser therapy in the treatment of progressive open-angle glaucoma allows to significantly decrease intraocular pressure and reduce the required dose of antihypertensive drugs.
