Help Your Eyes

Помоги своим глазам

Modern life puts a tremendous strain on the eyes of most people. And often after using your computer for a long amount of time, watching TV, prolonged reading, intense paperwork you can feel severe fatigue, eye pain and pressure behind your eyes.

In all these cases the harm to your vision is caused by focusing intensely on some activity or an object at the same distance from your eyes. And if you strain your eyes in such manner for extended periods of time, this may trigger a spasm of accommodation. When it happens rarely, from time to time, your vision will recover by itself, but if you overwork your eyes on a regular basis, you are more likely to develop myopia.

Furthermore, all electronic gadgets (except E-ink display) emit visible light, due to which we сan see an image on the screen. They also emit blue violet light, harmful to the human eye. Prolonged exposure to this light leads to some extra symptoms of visual fatigue: dry eyes, eye pain, a sandy, gritty sensation in the eyes, headaches and eyebrow pain.

Therefore, if you do not help your eyes fight the fatigue, your vision will inevitably deteriorate. And to take some of the strain off your eyes, there are some simple exercises.

1.Сlose your eyes tightly and then open them.
2.Blink quickly for a few seconds.
3.Look first to your rightward corner, then to your leftward corner, then up and down.
4.Move your eyeballs first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise direction.
5.Look at a near object, then at something in the distance.
6.Сlose your eyes and massage your lids for a few seconds.

Today we know various eye exercises and eye training complexes, which can include exercises for completely different sets of eye muscles, but the most common is the following program:

  • Close your eyes tightly for a few seconds and then relax them. Repeat it 2-3 times.
  • Blink 20-30 times as quickly as possible, but do not strain your eyes.
  • Focus at a distant object for a minute, then look at an object located 15-20 cm from your eyes, focus on it for a minute. Repeat this exercise several times.
  • Rotate your eyeballs first in clockwise direction, then in anti-clockwise direction. Repeat it 3-4 times.
  • Open your eyes as wide as possible, squeeze them shut, open them wide again. Repeat the exercise several times.
  • Try to “draw” imaginary letters and figures with your eyes. You may do it with your eyes closed or open.
  • Sit back, relax your shoulders and neck, close your eyes and place your palms gently over your eyelids (to achieve complete darkness). Remain in this position for at least 3 minutes.

You can do all these exercises in the order presented and in their entirety, or combine them by picking up some of them separately – in either case, it will take no more than 5-10 minutes. But you should do these exercises at least once every 2-3 hours.

Your lifestyle is a matter of great importance to your eye health. Particular attention you should pay to your sleep, your regime of outdoor walks and your food. Lack of good-quality sleep at night affects the eyes in the most direct way: your eyes feel much more tired during the day if you slept less than 5-7 hours. Walking outdoors per se is beneficial for our health, but natural light is especially good for our eyes. It is advised to walk during hours when the sun is not bright, but it is still light outside.

But you should remember: if the above mentioned symptoms (dry eyes, eye pain, etc.) occur regularly, then you`d better not risk it and consult a qualified eye doctor.
